Happy Monday October 7, 2019!
Wealth Matters Focal Point today: Increasing your cognition and context (i.e. your capacity to “think” and the condition of the playing field you are executing on.)
“Whether it be investing in innovation or setting personal goals vision is paramount, but humans often confuse a good view with a short distance.” ~ Mickey McManus
Cognition can no longer afford to be a “soft science”. Cognition is the cornerstone of wealth creation across all six of the domains of human experience. Organic cognition gives us humans the ability to manifest thought energy into its physical equivalent (i.e. create).
Exponential: The last 100 years and the next 20…
We are spiritual beings having a human experience ever since this fragmented source energy found itself a host in a new (non-single cell organism) species that evolved out of the primordial ooze millions of years or so years ago on planet Earth in the oldest R&D lab we’re aware of presently. Mother Nature has been disrupting for 4.5B years. Mother Nature is the O.G (Original Gangsta) of innovation and yet through our unique and divinely powerful consciousness in just 10,000 short years we have compounded our collective creation from @4m humans on the planet into the last 100-year exponential curve of population growth, productivity and complexity that has taken our species from just over 1B people on the planet to over 7.7B since the early 1900s.
“In the next 20 years, humans will experience as much fundamental “change” as in the last 300 years combined” Gerd Leonhard
In addition to the 7-fold increase in the population of our species, we have also managed to create a new primordial soup according to my friend Mickey McManus (Author of Trillions) that has brought a new species with “silicon cognition” into Mother Nature’s playground. By confusing as Mickey says “a good view with a short distance” since Moore’s law in 1971 we feel like we have heard this all before since the mid-1980’s when artificial intelligence was the top of mind and films like Terminator and Mad Max became box-office hits. The reality is that our organic cognition is housed in an incredibly designed hardware system and decentralize human nodal network that evolved over millions of years without an operating manual and this new industrial internet species of our creation evolves in pico-seconds (one-trillionth of a second).
Why is this important to consider and understand? Simply put. The silicon cognition that can collect infinite forms of the data exhaust from the smart devices we have adorned our daily lives with can now compute (and immediately learn) from our human actions in real-time and shape shift a 1-to-1 personal reality that is uniquely and dynamically different from the environment/context that existed shortly before.
Business models that “felt like free” evolved over the first three decades of the internet and one of the unintended consequences we now each experience is what Mickey has called “Malicious Denial of Service Attacks on Cognition” or in layman’s terms the algorithm has hijacked our most precious skillset (the ability to think) to a point where now even “thinking people” have trouble thinking after 9a.m. most mornings because they have spent all their precious brain sugar reacting to alerts, beeps, and triggers from their smartphone before even getting to work.
Why is this so troubling? Because this new reality is causing us to live through a cognitive depression and despite unprecedented levels of growth in global GDP and improvements, most people you know (or even reading this) have a feeling that things are getting worse, not better, even though data says the opposite. Cognition is our ability to make sense of our environment, make clear decisions, and be rationale and without cognition we are just reactionary and in “fight or flight” mode 24/7. It is impossible to feel and live wealthy if you have burnt out your adrenals.
So today. Take baby steps to restore and cultivate your cognition and thanks for reading!
Habits to Cultivate and Restore Your Cognition…
-Don’t make the smartphone your morning alarm and sleep in a different room than where it is charging overnight.
-Before checking it in the morning, spend at least 5 or 10 minutes when you first awake contemplating your body, mind, and plan for the day
-Consider a simple 3x5 card stack by your bedstand to write your top 5 things you intend/need to accomplish that day before you view your iCal or Google Calendar and myriad of messages, alerts, and social media feed.
-Spend at least an hour or more per week out in nature doing something active and leave your phone in the car or at home.
