Single's Day 2019; and Two Gartner Fellows Release New Enterprise Blockchain Framework
Issue #25 November 8th 2019 Wealth Matters Weekend Edition
Blockchain is the most misused and abused buzzword since “customer experience” in the media and enterprise software world. The Oprah Winfrey meme of “Everyone gets a blockchain” has sadly become a reality. This has burnt-out many a smart and powerful business leader, CIO, or institutional investor on the topic.
Meanwhile the nascent and rebellious startup, cryptographer, anarchist, and developer community continues to organize events (sell the picks and shovels of the gold rush) that attract the leading exchanges in support, but have mostly failed to deliver any traction to new attendee growth or sponsorship during the crypto bear market as they desperately hold on to the sales from the startup community who overpays for the chance to get on stage, or maybe raise money the hard way in a post-ICO winter with continued regulatory uncertainty.
This is where the latest framework from Gartner Blockchain Centre of Excellence (replay the webinar) and new book, (that I just finished last night) by Distinguished Gartner VP and Fellow David Furlonger and VP Distinguished Analyst Christophe Uzureau comes at an important time.
You should put it on your reading list for Kindle or Amazon Prime delivery this holiday weekend and you can visit this Gartner site link to review the core tenants of their research and the Gartner Blockchain Spectrum which see key adoption and scale of the technology between 2023-2030.
These 4 phases of Blockchain adoption map to several of the other macro-economic and demographic forces I have been pontificating about in previous issues and provides a research-backed context for investors and technologists looking to assess how early, on time, or behind they may be in preparing their enterprise.

If you think the meme below is sad but true, but want to really understand the sober-reality and important potential of blockchain technology then read (or listen) their book.

Will Singles’ Day 2019 the last one not paid fully in PBOC Crypto?
President Xi added the importance of investing in blockchain to “Xi Thought” in the last two weeks and this coming Monday will be predicted to be another record-setting consumer-holiday as CNBC highlights Forrestor’s forecast that the 2019 version of Alibaba’s Singles Day should generate over $37B (a 20.5% YOY increase) in revenue in a single 24-hour period.

The questions I have for us all to ponder are:
“Will this be the last time in history that the world’s largest consumer holiday transacts in something other than a PBOC controlled “cashless” sovereign cryptocurrency?” and if so,
“What impact will a major crypto adoption case like Single’s Day create on the global economy and adoption curve in sovereign and decentralized payment cryptos in 2021-2023?”
Time will tell but the intersection of this global annual inflection point and the rollout of China’s state-controlled blockchain strategy are two signals to pay attention to as the next world order continues to take shape. It is also important to match these news stories against the framework and research above to read the tea leaves of where and how mass adoption and the balance of decentralized and centralized hybrid (or incomplete) blockchain solutions will be deployed in the coming years and where the arbitrage opportunities and long term value will be realized.
Enjoy your weekend. ~ Chris
